Among other things, a statistician can help determine what data are necessary and in what quantity, and how, where, and when to obtain them so that they contain the maximum amount of information about what is being investigated. A statistician is also qualified to clarify the questions being asked and to collaborate on a correct formulation of the problem. It can therefore be said that, if the statistician takes part in a study before gathering data, a more efficient undertaking will follow, possibly including monetary savings.
